Laura Phillips learned about Venn diagrams in pre-algebra last Friday, arranging digits into circles that overlapped if they were both prime numbers and factors of 12. It was fun, the 11-year-old said, because she took the lesson on her personal computer. And it was flexible, because she did it at her home in Eugene.
Laura is one of a growing number of American students enrolled in virtual academies, schools that offer an online curriculum for students who don’t quite fit the public school model, either because it moves too fast, too slow or in the wrong direction.
