How to Get Started at CLC

New Students Registration Steps for Credit Classes

Step 1: Attend a New Student Orientation

All new degree-seeking students should attend a New Student Orientation Session to learn more about the college's programs, services, admission requirements and registration procedures. Refer to the calendar published in the class schedule for dates and times. Registration for the sessions is necessary. All new non-degree seeking students are encouraged to attend an Advisement Information Meeting. Meetings include information about CLC programs, services and admission requirements. Refer to the calendar in the class schedule for dates and times.

Step 2: Submit an Application for Admission & Required Credentials

Submit a completed CLC Application for Admission to the Admission and Records Office. Also provide any required credentials as proof for meeting prerequisites. Send college transcripts to CLC for evaluation. Pick up a college catalog at the Student Recruitment Office or Counseling Center, if you plan to earn a degree or certificate. See the current class schedule for an application form and and for admission requirements.

Step 3: Meet Prerequisites

Meeting prerequisites is necessary before enrolling in most college courses. You can meet the prerequisites by demonstrating language proficiency or math proficiency through CLC's Basic Skills Assessment; ACT or SAT scores; high school transcripts; GED scores; TOEFL scores; or previous college course work. See the class schedule for specifics. In addition, you may need to take placements tests for math, chemistry, computer information systems and /or other courses. Many courses require specific course prerequisites (i.e., courses that must be taken before) or corequisites (courses that must be taken along with the course you wish to take). Call the CLC testing center at 543-2076 for information on testing times.

Step 4: Meet with a Counselor

Meet with a counselor to help you with educational planning. If you are unable to meet both the language and math proficiencies, you are required to meet with a counselor before you register. If you a degree-seeking student and are unable to meet one of the proficiencies, you are required to meet with a counselor or advisor to select the most appropriate courses. Counselors are available 8 a.m.-8:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Friday, in Room C110 at the Grayslake Campus (847-543-2060). Counselors are available by appointment at Lakeshore Campus (847-543-2186) and Southlake Educational Center (847-478-1833).

Step 5: Select Classes & Register

Use the class schedule to select your classes and times. You may register by touch-tone telephone by calling 223-1111. If you wish assistance in registering, you may come to the registration area at the Grayslake Campus, Lakeshore Campus or Southlake Educational Center. See the current class schedule for registration dates and times, plus additional satellite registration sites.

Step 6: Pay Tuition and Fees

Pay tuition and fees by the due date given you when you register. The college offers several payment options, and if you qualify, financial aid may be available. For information about tuition payment, call 543-2230; for information about financial aid, call 543-2062.

Continuing and Returning Students Registration steps for Credit Classes

Step 1: Meet with an advisor or counselor 

You meet with a faculty advisor if you are a continuing CLC student who has met basic skills prerequisites in language and math and has selected a program of study. All full-time faculty members are faculty advisors and are available during the fall and spring semesters during posted office hours or by appointment. For information about how to contact your faculty advisor, call the appropriate division office listed in the class schedule. Faculty advisors ordinarily are not available during the week of final exams, between semesters or during the summer session. Meeting an advisor or counselor is mandatory before registering for these students:

  • Degree or certificate seeking students prior to their 19th and 41st transfer or career credit hour
  • Students on academic restriction
  • Students who are unable to demonstrate proficiency in language or math skills
  • Conditionally admitted students who plan to transfer and have exceeded 40 career or transfer credits

Additionally, students should meet with a counselor if they are:

  • Undecided about a program of study
  • Seeking specific transfer information to another institution
