Library Technical Assistant Program

Library Technical Assistants (LTAs) are a vital part of the library team. With their education and training in the organization and management of information and resources, LTAs assist librarians in working directly with patrons and working behind the scenes to acquire, organize and prepare materials for use.

LTAs work in all types of libraries:

  • public
  • school
  • academic
  • special

Typical duties in public service area of libraries include:

  • assisting patrons in finding materials and basic information
  • charging materials in and out
  • planning programs
  • teaching computer skills to library patrons

Typcial duties behind the scenes include:

  • processing of interlibrary loans
  • acquiring and processing new library materials
  • assisting with basic cataloging functions
  • performing library inventory
  • supervising other staff members

Summer 2008 Classes!

LTA 121, Introduction to Library Science, will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from June 10 through July 2 from 9 am to 4 pm. LTA 252, Administration of the School Library Media Center, will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 10 through June 26. This is a hybrid course that combines online and classroom time.

Questions? Call Anne Chernaik at (847) 543-2460.

Will you need to be in school making up snow days on June 9 and 10? Many students have asked about this. LTA 252 is already a hybrid class that combines classroom and online time. Its first class meeting will be June 12. LTA 121 is not a hybrid class, but will meet for the first time on June 11. Expect an online assignment during the course to compensate for the adjustment in classroom hours.
