The CLC Library has the ability to obtain items from other libraries and to lend to our patrons through a process called interlibrary loan. Although interlibrary loan can take quite a bit longer, the average delivery time is from two to three weeks. Interlibrary loan offers a convenient means for borrowing books from other libraries without actually having to visit them in person.
How does it work?
Obtain an interlibrary loan request form at the Reference Desk or
print a copy of the form (requires Adobe Acrobat reader) and bring it in or email it to
cblass@clcillinois.edu. You will need to fill it out with full information about the item you are requesting. For a journal article, include title, author(s), journal title, volume, pages and date. For a book or audiovisual item, include title, author, publisher, publication date, and edition if applicable. For both books and articles, you must also include information about the source (index, database, etc.) where you learned of the item. Your deadline date is the date after which you can no longer use the item. Your deadline date must be
at least three weeks from your asking date (ex. you request the item on January 1st, your deadline date must be the 21st or later). Bring your form and your computer printout to the Reference Desk to be checked by a librarian. The librarian will give the form to the library reference technician to process.
You will be called when your interlibrary loan comes in. You may pick it up at the Circulation Desk on the first floor. Payment can be made at that time, if any is due. Either cash, check or credit card (VISA, Mastercard or Discover) is acceptable.
You may have up to five books and audiovisual requests and ten periodical requests outstanding at a time. When one item comes in, you may submit another.
The average delivery time is 2-3 weeks. No notification will be made if an item cannot be obtained by your deadline date. The borrowed item will be checked out according to the lending library’s specification. While you may call our Interlibrary Loan staff for renewals, permission for a renewal is up to the lending library.
Who can use this service?
Students who are registered for class at the College of Lake County (CLC) may request interlibrary loans without a fee. Any cost incurred is subsidized by the College.
Community patrons include community members, staff members who are ordering material not directly related to their work at the College, and students enrolled at other institutions whose class meets at CLC. The entire cost incurred by the Library in obtaining articles will be passed along to the patron. We cannot know in advance if there will be a charge or how much that charge will be, as that is determined by the supplying library. The cost is about $8.50 - $12.50 per article or less. Patrons may indicate the maximum amount they are willing to pay, and must guarantee payment with a credit card number and signature. Payment is made at the Circulation Desk when the article is picked up. Articles which are not picked up within two weeks of notification are discarded and billed to the patron's credit card.
Interlibrary Loan Tips
- Don't wait until the last minute to use interlibrary loan. Requests can take 3 weeks or more to arrive depending on the availability of the item.
- Fill out the interlibrary request form as completely as possible. Your request can take longer to process or be rejected if sufficient information is not provided.
- Items that may be requested through interlibrary loan include: books, articles, and audiovisual materials (VHS, DVD, CDs, records, audio tapes).
- Audiovisual materials may take longer to obtain and have shorter loan periods. Many libraries do not lend A/V materials through interlibrary loan.
- Most libraries will not loan reference materials and text books.
- Loan periods are determined by the lending library. Items can be recalled before their due date. You will be notified if the lending library recalls your item, and will be expected to return it promptly.
- If you need to renew an item call the CLC interlibrary loan staff at (847)543-2465 before the due date. You will only be allowed to renew the item ONCE. You will be notified of the new due date when the lending library approves the renewal. If the lending library does not renew the item, you will be asked to return it as soon as possible.
- If you renew an overdue book, you will still be charged fines for the amount of time it was overdue.
